Reporting and Writing

Here is a partial list of the type of careers our alumni build. 

Tim Broderick (‘92) is data journalist for Chicago’s Daily Herald, where he creates graphics, develops interactive news applications, designs special projects and explores data to develop story ideas for reporters.

Shea Lazansky (‘14) is a reporter at the Daily Republican in Marion, IL.

Robyn Dexter (‘13) is a digital editor and staff writer for the La Due News in St. Louis, MO., where she writes five stories a week and manages online content.

John Ferak (‘95) is investigative team editor for Gannett Wisconsin Media, where he develops projects and directs reporters at 10 state newspapers.

Dann Gire ('74) is the film critic of the Chicago Daily Herald. He also serves as the president and founding director of the Chicago Film Critics Association and sits on the board of directors for the Chicago Headline Club.

Lisa Green (‘86) is assistant managing editor for The Journal-Gazette in Fort Wayne, Ind., where she oversees metro and business news.

Ted Gregory (‘81) is a reporter for Chicago Tribune, where he won a Pulitzer Prize in 2008. He also is the co-author of two books, “Our Black Year” and “To Chase A Dream.”

Stephanie Henry (’96) is a news and science writer with News and Public Affairs for the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois.  She covers research and news in ACES for distribution to outside media and the public, as well as for publication on the college news site and other College of ACES/U of I publications.

Dave Lindquist ('96) is a pop music writer at the Indiana-Post Star.

Matt Hopf ('08) is a staff writer for The Quincy Herald-Whig where he focuses on city and county government.

Janice Hunt (‘97) achieved her childhood dream when she bought her hometown newspaper. Handling all editorial, business and circulation duties, she has transformed the Oakland Independent into an award-winning publication.

Nora Maberry-Daniels (‘05) is the editor of the St. Joseph Leader, where she covers St. Joseph area school boards, village boards and sports teams. 

Tim Martin (‘06) is beat reporter for the Wall Street Journal, where he covers credit-market risk for the WSJ's Money & Investing section.

Dave McKinney (‘86) is the Springfield Bureau Chief for the Chicago Sun-Times, where he covers state politics. 

Herb Meeker (’81) is a reporter, photographer, columnist and copy editor for the Effingham Teutopolis News Report in Effingham, where he covers Effingham County. 

Don O'Brien (’93) is a reporter for the Quincy Herald-Whig, where he covers crime and courts and is a columnist.

Bill Ruthhart (’02) is a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, where he covers the mayor’s office and coordinates political and government coverage of Chicago 

Marco Santana ('08) is a reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, where he covers technology, defense and banking/finance.

Holly Thomas (‘07), a case manager and crisis counselor for sexual assault and domestic abuse survivors at Advocates Building Peaceful Communities in Steamboat Springs, Colo., published a book, IR Theory & State Cooperation on Blood Diamonds in 2013. Her creative work can be found in Cream City Review, O-Dark-Thirty, and Crack the Spine Literary Magazine.
