Take a look at our award-winning student media. Congratulations and many thanks to the students who work hard to keep The Daily Eastern News, the Warbler yearbook, and WEIU-TV’s News Watch strong and relevant to our campus, city and the surrounding area.

 

2016-17

• The Daily Eastern News won first place in Newspaper Overall Excellence for newspapers published more than weekly and first place in Companion Website Overall Excellence in the national Society for Collegiate Journalists contest. The staff won another two firsts, three seconds, three thirds and five honorable mentions in the SCJ contest.

• The Warbler staff won second place in The Terry Vander Heyden Award competition for coverage of the year in the SCJ national contest. The staff also won four other second-place awards in the contest.

• WEIU-TV News Watch’s Brian Hartman won an honorable mention in the Student News Talent EMMY competition from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid America Region for Student Production News.

• WEIU-TV News Watch’s Shannon Satterlee shared an EMMY with another student who is not a journalism major for Short Form Non Fiction from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid America Region.

• WEIU-TV News Watch won an EMMY from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid America Region for Student Production News.

 

2015-16

• WEIU-TV News Watch’s Nathan Page won first place for Outstanding TV Videography in the Illinois News Broadcasters State Collegiate News Awards competition.

• WEIU-TV News Watch’s Nick Ruffolo won first place for Best TV Sports Pack in the Illinois Broadcasters’ Association Student Silver Dome Awards competition.

• The Daily Eastern News won first place in Newspaper Overall Excellence for newspapers published more than weekly in the national Society for Collegiate Journalists contest. The staff won another two firsts, two seconds, two thirds and five honorable mentions in the contest.

• The Warbler staff won a third-place award for entertainment spread in the College Media Association’s national Pinnacle Awards contest.

 

2014-15

• The Warbler won first place in the Associated Collegiate Press’s Best of Show competition at the national college media Convention in Philadelphia.

• The Warbler won a first-place award for entertainment spread in the College Media Association’s national Pinnacle Awards contest.

• WEIU-TV News Watch won first place for Outstanding TV Newscast in the Illinois News Broadcasters State Collegiate News Awards competition.

• The Daily Eastern News won first place in Companion Website Overall Excellence and second place in Newspaper Overall Excellence for newspapers published more than weekly in the national Society for Collegiate Journalists contest. The staff won an additional three firsts, three seconds, two thirds and one honorable mention.

• The Daily Eastern News staff won three first- and six third-place awards and two honorable mentions in the Illinois College Press Association’s annual contest.

 

2013-14

• WEIU-TV News Watch won an EMMY from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid America Region for Student Production News.

• WEIU-TV News Watch’s Savanna Tomei won third place for Outstanding TV Reporting in the Illinois News Broadcasters State Collegiate News Awards competition.

• WEIU-TV News Watch won first place for Best TV Newscast in the Illinois Broadcasters’ Association Student Silver Dome Awards competition.

• The Warbler won first place in the Associated Collegiate Press’s Best of Show competition at the national college media convention in New Orleans.

• The Daily Eastern News won third place in the Associated Collegiate Press’s Best of Show competition at the national college media convention in New Orleans, competing in the four-year daily tabloid category.

 

2012-13

• The Warbler staff won first place in the Associated Collegiate Press’s Best of Show competition at the national college media convention in Chicago.

• WEIU-TV News Watch won an EMMY from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid America Region for Student Production News.

• WEIU-TV News Watch’s Victoria Zeal won third place for Outstanding TV Reporting in the Illinois News Broadcasters State Collegiate News Awards competition.

• The Daily Eastern News won first place in Newspaper Overall Excellence for newspapers published more than weekly in the national Society for Collegiate Journalists contest. The staff also won another four firsts, three seconds, four thirds and two honorable mentions in he contest.

• The Daily Eastern News staff won four first-, four second- and three third-place awards and five honorable mentions in the Illinois College Press Association’s annual contest.

 

2011-12

• WEIU-TV News Watch won an EMMY from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid America Region for Student Production News.

• WEIU-TV News Watch won first place for Outstanding TV Newscast Region 5 in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards competition.

• WEIU-TV News Watch won first place for Outstanding TV Newscast in the Society for Collegiate Journalists national competition.

• The Daily Eastern News won first place in Newspaper Overall Excellence for newspapers published more than weekly in the national Society for Collegiate Journalists contest. The staff also won another five firsts, three seconds and one third in the contest. 

• The Warbler yearbook staff won three second-place awards in the national SCJ contest.
