The Physics Department at Eastern Illinois University seeks qualified candidates for a tenure track faculty position starting in August 2023, subject to available funding.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 15, 2023
RESPONSIBILITIES: The responsibilities of this position include teaching upper and lower level undergraduate lecture and laboratory classes in Physics and Astronomy. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active research program and mentor undergraduate students, preferably in Planetary Astronomy or commensurate with available equipment. The successful candidate will also take on the duties of Director of the Observatory. The Director of the Observatory will provide technical oversight and help arrange outreach for the observatory.
QUALIFICATIONS: At the time of appointment, the qualified candidate must hold a PhD (or be ABD with PhD required for tenure) in Physics or Astronomy or closely related field. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to and enthusiasm for undergraduate physics education through classroom teaching. The qualified candidate should have demonstrated experience teaching upper and lower level undergraduate Physics and Astronomy courses. The successful candidate should be able to develop an active research program that involves undergraduates. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and experience with promoting inclusive excellence is required.

Major departmental equipment includes an observatory with a 16” computer controlled Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and an 8” solar telescope. Our faculty have access to the Astronomical Research Institute telescopes which include a 50”, 32”, 30”, and 24” computer controlled telescopes. The Department has 7 full time faculty, approximately 60 Physics majors in the various options, and an active Pre-engineering and Electrical Engineering program.
