As we enter the winding-down phase of the Covid pandemic, we know that students have different preferences about living on campus. Some of you may be eagerly looking forward to the social connection, support, and friendship that comes with having a roommate – which we fully intend to provide! 

But we also recognize that some of you may feel more comfortable having a room to yourself to aid in your social distancing efforts. That’s why EIU is offering up to $850 to students who wish to have a double room as a single room for the Spring 2022 semester. This grant does not have to be repaid and can be either refunded directly to you or applied to your student bill, depending on your preference. 

To get your best choice of housing, we recommend you have the following steps complete by December 15, 2021: 

If you have already submitted your contract, we’ll update your room preference to “Double as Single” once you submit your request for the grant. If you already requested a roommate, but still wish to have a Double as Single, we will do our best to place you next door or on the same floor as your friends, even if you choose to live by yourself. 

Please also note the following conditions: 

  • You must be a new incoming student for Spring 2022.  If you are a returning student and applied for this grant for fall 2021, you do not need to reapply.   
  • You must live in an EIU residence hall during Spring 2022 semester to qualify. 
  • These grants may be limited, so priority will be given to students with exceptional need. (We’re using funds provided by the U.S. Department of Education.) 
  • If you are eligible for Pell grants, you will receive $850 for Spring 2022, which will cover the full additional cost of a double room as a single room. If you are not eligible for Pell grants, you will instead receive $750 for Spring 2022, so you would only be charged an additional $100. 
  • The full $850 charge will still appear on your student bill, but the grant will be provided (either directly to you or applied to your bill) in the first month of each semester. 
  • The final deadline for this grant is January 10, 2022. If you don’t complete the steps above by December 15, you can still apply for the grant, but it may be more difficult to accommodate your housing and neighbor preferences. 
  • The grant will be applied to your financial aid on PAWS the first week of the fall semester.  You will receive an email with instructions on how to answer the disbursement authorization at that time.  Please watch your Panthermail for an email from the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships with instructions.

How do I apply for the grant? 

Ensure you have applied for housing and submitted your Room and Board Contract, and request a Double as Single for your room type preference. Then you’ll also need to apply for the grant here: 


How do I know if I’ll receive the full $850 or $750?  How do I know if I am Pell-grant eligible?

Can I still live near my friend(s) that I requested as roommates in my original contract? 

Yes, we will do our best to place you near your original requested roommate.   


How do I receive the grant funds? 

The full $850 charge for the Double as Single room will still appear on your student bill.  The grant funds, which do not have to be repaid, can be refunded directly to you or applied directly to your student bill.  When classes begin this fall, you must answer the disbursement authorization question on the 2021-2022 Financial Aid - Resources tab on PAWS in order for this award to disburse.  Instructions to complete this requirement can be found here - along with a video tutorial here. Please note, the disbursement authorization will not be displayed until January when Financial Aid enters the award.
