EIU Foundation

History and Organization

Founded in 1953 under the leadership and direction of H Ogden Brainard, the Eastern Illinois University Foundation has, since its inception, been dependent upon the generosity of its members to encourage and provide private support to the University, and to promote the ideals of volunteerism and philanthropy among alumni, friends and employees of the University. The Foundation, an Illinois not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, is a completely separate organization from the University defined by the State as a University Related Organization (URO).

General Membership

Our members come from a variety of backgrounds and professional areas, and include EIU alumni, annuitants, community leaders, and business and educational professionals. Members serve for a term of five years, and at the end of each term the retiring class is invited to renew. Currently there are 318 members.

Those accepting Foundation membership have, or should be willing to facilitate philanthropy for the benefit of Eastern Illinois University. Members are nominated because they are friends of the University and are respected leaders in the community who can encourage and promote philanthropy from others. Members become the link between the University and the community it serves and may be able to assist in identifying, cultivating, and nurturing potential donors…and maybe even opening doors that President Glassman and his staff might not be able to open.

The University and Foundation are dependent on its members to help us maintain our connection to the diverse community we serve. In addition to facilitating support from others, we ask members to consider their own level of support, whether it is spreading the word about the great events and programs taking place at EIU, providing financial support through cash or in-kind gifts, or volunteering their time and expertise for the benefit of University programs or activities. We hope members will work to encourage volunteerism and philanthropy to Eastern and help facilitate private sector support that is so critical to the University’s mission.

With that goal in mind, members are encouraged to consider any number of ways to support EIU:

 •  Provide time, talents, or gifts to support the University programs of their choice.

 •  Help identify prospective donors and facilitate introductions when needed.

 •  Provide suggestions and feedback on how we can encourage and facilitate private sector support for the University.

 •  Attend the Foundation’s Annual Meeting in October for the purpose of electing new members and directors, networking with other members, and becoming acquainted with current activities and future plans of the University.

 •  Attend Legacy Celebration to help support the Foundation and recognize the outstanding philanthropists.

 •  If asked, be willing to serve on the Foundation Board of Directors or as a volunteer on one of the Foundation’s committees.

 •  Provide the Board Development Committee with names of individuals for consideration as new members of the Foundation.
