Follow the Evidence: The Trial of the Lincoln Conspirators
John Surratt | Prosecution | Defense | Verdict |
April 14, 1865 | The Conspirators
There was no doubt that Dr. Samuel Mudd introduced John Surratt to John Wilkes Booth or that Surratt agreed to participate in the kidnapping of President Lincoln. But evidence proving that Surratt was in the United States on April 14, 1865 would be difficult to find. This would rely mostly on witness testimony. Many of these witnesses also participated in the military trial of the other conspirators.
