You can register for one of these exams through the EIU testing office on 9th Street 581-5986 or UIUC Turner Student Services 610 East John St. 217-244-1342. Our department requires a certificate of comprehensive knowledge which is signed by three members of the graduate faculty. This certificate is not submitted to the graduate school until after the receipt of the standardized exam scores and the successful completion of the Graduate Forum (non-thesis) or Thesis Defense.
Students pursuing a non-thesis degree must register for the Graduate Forum 5960 in the first week of the relevant semester. The Graduate Forum is a one-semester hour course which requires the forum participants research an assigned project under faculty advisement. A joint presentation is made at the end of the semester to a committee of Graduate Faculty members. Evaluations are based on semester progress and the final presentation.
Students pursuing the thesis degree must register for Thesis 5950 in the first week of the relevant semester. Contact the department chair to register for this class. Before registering for the thesis hours, you should speak with the graduate advisor and relevant faculty to determine your thesis committee members and the chair of your thesis committee. Upon completion of your thesis, you must schedule a thesis defense. To ensure compliance with departmental and college requirements for the submission of your thesis, please review the pertinent materials at the Graduate School's Miscellaneous Forms and Information.
