Maliya Smith Earns DFI Honor

Maliya Smith is currently a second-year graduate student in the clinical counseling program. Recently, Maliya received a Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois (DFI) Fellowship award from the Illinois Board of higher education. The DFI program annually offers competitive Fellowship Awards to over 100 Illinois minority graduate students. The DFI Fellowship programs help minority students completing graduate degrees, and those who are interested in leading two faculty or staff positions at Illinois higher education institutions. One of the goals of DFI is to increase the number of minority full-time tenure track faculty and staff at Illinois’ two- and four-year, public and private colleges and universities. Maliya plans to continue practicing clinical counseling while preparing to research a population to discover their clinical needs.

“I’ve been inspired by so many people at EIU and in my own family to use my voice to lift up other underrepresented students who are trying to create better lives for themselves and their families.”
