MEI RISE Chat: '(In)visible Disabilities and Discrimination in the Workplace, Classroom, and Community'
Friday, 09 April, 2021 @ 04:30 PM - 06:00 PM | Cost:Free
Do you or a loved one struggle with a visible or invisible disability? Have you ever faced what you felt like was discrimination concerning that disability when applying for a job or trying to carry out your work obligations? Have you struggled with lack of accommodations in the classroom? Moreover, do you feel you have faced a general misunderstanding or lack of consideration for disabilities in the world at large? Come listen to students, professors, and community members share their stories in a virtual chat-style panel. Then, share your own or learn from others how to be more accommodating in the workplace, classroom, and community. Together, we hope the experiences shared during this event will provide support to those who are differently abled, educate faculty and students how to be more supportive, and open the eyes of all attendees to circumstances they may not have previously considered. As always, we will discuss how this diversity topic also intersects with race and gender issues.
Panelists will include JJ Pionke (U of Illinois - specialist on disability discrimination & accommodations), Dr. Jennifer Buchter (EIU professor - Special Education), Sharifa Hurtault (EIU undergrad student & producer at WEIU), and Heather Vaupel (EIU grad student). This event is part of Making Excellence Inclusive (MEI) RISE Chat series of diversity talks. MEI is EIU's overarching faculty-student diversity organization.
