Title: An Informal Primer on the Alexander Polynomial

Abstract: The Alexander Polynomial is a classic example of the interface and interplay
between  geometric  topology,  algebraic  topology,  and  algebra,  the   rst  but
not least in a long line of increasingly powerful polynomial invariants of knots
and 3-manifolds.  Recently it has arisen in recent joint work of Petrenko.  At
Bogdan's request,  I will present an informal introduction to the Alexander
polynomial  and  its  relation  to  Seifert  surfaces,  cyclic  covering  spaces,  and
homology.
