Covering a Kidnapping: Reporting on the Murder of Yingying Zhang |
In 2017, Chinese researcher Yingying Zhang disappeared from the University of Illinois campus in Urbana. Two years later, a former graduate student was convicted of kidnapping and killing her. The case drew media coverage in the United States and China, and Champaign News-Gazette reporter Ben Zigterman covered the story from its beginning.
In a conversation with EIU journalism instructor Joe Astrouski, Zigterman will discuss his experience covering this high-profile case and the lessons he learned along the way.

Heart Healthy: Shopping & Cooking |
We recognize that our dietary habits make a significant impact on heart health – and some of what we “know” may not be the most accurate. In celebration of National Heart Health Month, Dr. Melanie Burns, RDN will guide us in food label reading with a keen eye on sodium content and how to prepare foods at home to be lower in sodium. Attendance at both sessions is not required. Limited to 12 participants.
The first session will meet at County Market (Study Room, FL 2) and will include a brief update of heart healthy guidelines and an opportunity to put that knowledge into practice in the grocery store aisles reading food labels.
The second session will meet on Eastern’s campus in Klehm Hall 2309 where we will modify and prepare recipes to be more sodium friendly. So, be sure to bring your appetite for delicious, lower sodium foods! Please Register by 1/31/2020.
