Abuse of Faith: A public presentation by Houston Chronicle reporter Robert Downen |
Houston Chronicle reporter Robert Downen, a 2014 graduate in journalism from Eastern Illinois University, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Buzzard Auditorium, on the Chronicle's on-going investigative series of abuse in the Southern Baptist church.
The investigation, by the Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News, reveals that in the past 20 years, a disturbing number of Southern Baptists with formal church roles have engaged in sexual misconduct. They were pastors. Deacons. Youth pastors. They left behind more than 700 victims.
Downen, a former opinions editor for The Daily Eastern News, will be in campus for three days speaking to classes in criminology, women and gender studies, and journalism as part of the Fox-Thornburgh Visiting Professionals series.
His talk Tuesday is free and open to the public.
