Mathematics and Computer Science Club Meeting |
Dear Math & CS Student,
In the efforts to strengthen the community within the Mathematics & Computer Science Department, I want to reach out and invite you to join the Math & CS Club. We are reinstating this organization to provide a way for students to interact with each other and create relationships under the topics of mathematics and computer science.
This semester we have a unique and interesting opportunity provided to use by the library. The library is currently holding their Spring exhibit which is about Space and Space Exploration. They thought it would be interesting if there were a group of students that would like to work together and produce a collaborative piece about the technical side of space exploration, mathematics and computer science. The library would allow you to display this work throughout the semester or even conduct an oral iteration of the work. Their exhibit also invites important people within the space exploration community, people who have devoted their lives to the subject area. Those people would be interested in holding one on one conversations and discussions with groups of students interested in the area of space exploration. That group would be Math & CS Club.
This club is also not restricted to the majors, we encourage anyone who is interested in the fields of mathematics and computer science to join. If you know anyone that would be interested please let them know.
Finally, my name is Seth Yeakel, a Junior Mathematics Major, and I have high hopes for this organization Our goal is to provide each and every one of you new and exciting experiences. This organization may also provide students with an outlet for their undergraduate research and student teaching experiences, allowing for students to compare and contrast ideas or experiences they have held separately. I sure hope you consider joining, our first meeting with be held Wednesday February 13th at 4:30pm in 2210 Old Main. If you are interested please message me @Seth W Yeakel and if you are unable to attend, but are interested please do likewise. I want to start the Registered Student Organization process once we have dedicated membership and our proposed constitution is attached.
Thank you for considering this rare opportunity and to also strengthen the Mathematics & Computer Science Department,
-Seth Yeakel

Biological Effects on the Human Body During Spaceflight |
Feb. 15, 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. (two sessions), “Biological Effects on the Human Body During Spaceflight,” presented by James “Joel” Knapper, NASA Solar System Ambassador, sponsored by EIU Department of Biological Sciences; Room 3080 of Life Sciences Building.
Sending astronauts to explore the solar system has been a topic of science fiction writers for over a century. Fifty years ago, mankind took the first small step in the exploration of another world when Neil Armstrong explored the surface of the Moon. Today, mankind is poised to venture further into deep space with the goal of exploring Mars. There are many technological challenges to travelling the 140 million miles to Mars; however, perhaps the largest obstacles to overcome are the biological challenges to the human body. NASA Solar System Ambassador James Joel Knapper will be presenting an overview of these biological hurdles as well as our current human Mars exploration plans.
A dedicated and active NASA Solar System Ambassador, James “Joel” Knapper has been hooked on NASA and space exploration since grade school. James earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in English Education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. James is an officer of his local amateur astronomy group, the Kankakee Area Stargazers, where he presents monthly updates on NASA programs. He also hosts many other NASA events in the Chicago area. Joel, his wife Dawn and his three children live in Bourbonnais, IL.
