Film screening: 'Paywall: The Business of Scholarship' |
International Open Access Week is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and as part of the celebration Booth Library will host events and feature OA collections.
Open Access Week, Oct. 22-28, 2018, is celebrated globally and provides an opportunity for the academic and research community to learn about open access to information and its potential benefits, and to share what they know with others. Open access is the free and immediate online access to the results of scholarly research.
OA resources take many forms: electronic books, media, journals and open educational resources, such as the Open Textbooks Alliance e-books available from Booth. Eastern Illinois University’s institutional repository, The Keep, coordinated by Booth Library, is open access and shares the scholarly output of EIU faculty with the world.
As part of Open Access Week activities, Booth Library will feature two film screenings, “Paywall: The Business of Scholarship” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, and “The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. Both films will be shown in the Doudna Fine Arts Center Lecture Hall. There is no charge, and the public is invited.
On Thursday, Oct. 25, the public is invited to a brown bag lunch discussion of open educational resources with Lynne Curry (History), Lauri DeRuiter-Willems (Health Promotion) and Stacey Knight-Davis (Booth Library). They will discuss their experiences in teaching with resources that have zero costs for their students. The discussion will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Edgar Room of the library.
Throughout the week Booth Library exhibits will feature open access resources and provide information for students, scholars and the community to learn about the open access movement.
For more information on Open Access Week, contact Steve Brantley, head of Reference at Booth Library, at 581-7542 or jsbrantley@eiu.edu.

The Visual Syllabus: What Is This Course Really About? |
A Workshop for Faculty by Cheelan Bo-Linn, Wed., 24 October 2018, 12:00—1:30, 1895 Room, MLK, Jr. Student Union
- When we design a course, we often juggle fitting in desired content and the required or intended outcomes. The process can result in a course overflowing with content and/or a long list of learning goals that are only somewhat connected. We might envision how these connect or build, but students often see these as a disconnected series of topics.
- This workshop helps implement a successful approach that results in a more cohesive, meaningful course design. Participants will create a visual syllabus to help faculty and students envision with the course. The Visual Syllabus approach challenges faculty to define their course by its single big idea which serves as a framework for prioritizing what is most important to know and do. Take your course to the next level by expressing this big idea as an image. A benefit for the students is that they will more successfully connect and organize their knowledge.
- Cheelan Bo-Linn is the Senior Specialist in Education in the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL) at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and Lecturer in the Department of Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership.
- Bring a syllabus or course idea that you will be implementing in the Spring semester! This is a brown-bag, so bring your lunch. The FDIC will provide drinks and snacks. Register now(@eiu.gosignmeup.com)!

FDIC Webinar: Giving Effective Feedback |
Feedback is an ongoing process that conveys non-judgmental information that helps the learner build on a foundation of skills and behaviors. Effective feedback helps the learner access his/her performance in order to identify areas for retention and areas to improve. Giving formative feedback can be a useful teaching tool in any face-to-face, online, or hybrid course. In this webinar, we will summarize the advantages of providing feedback to diverse learners, describe a process for providing effective feedback, and provide quick tips that can aid in providing comprehensive feedback. Instructional technologies beneficial in the process of providing effective feedback will also be explored. Sign up for this FDIC webinar with Julie Lockett. A web address for joining the session will be sent to registrants in the confirmation and reminder emails for the webinar. https://eiu.gosignmeup.com
