Dr. Zhiwei Liu will briefly introduce the biological background of teas and the tea plant, the classification of teas and how they are made, and how to properly brew different kinds of teas. You will be then taken on a journey back into the Chinese history to find out how this little plant has become integrated in the Chinese culture, from poetry, to daily life of the average folks, and finally to become a government-controlled merchandise, and how these little leaves led the Middle Kingdom into a position to defend itself against invading western powers and eventually opened itself to the rest of the world, although reluctantly. While you immerse yourself in the fascinating stories of tea, you will be invited to taste several of Dr. Liu’s favorite teas directly from China.

Offered by the Academy of Lifelong Learning; instructed by Dr. Zhiwei Liu, hosted by The Cafe, Klehm Hall.  Seating is limited - registration requested at 217-581-5114 by 10/28.

Booth Library's University Archives & Special Collections and the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) housed within it are unique resources on the EIU campus. The University Archives houses the 1895 Old Main time capsule, Garner Sheet Music Collection, and an oral history interview collection. The Archives serve to preserve University history through photographs, documents, faculty manuscript collections, and other diverse ephemera. Booth Library’s Special Collections represent a broader range of resources, including postcard collections, regional history related resources, and rare bound volumes from as far back as the 17th century.

Bill Schultz, Jr., Cataloging Librarian who also serves as the Interim Head of the University Archives & Special Collections will provide an overview of the University Archives, Special Collections and IRAD. He will show examples of the types of records and documents that can be found in each area, discuss archival practices to organize and preserve such materials, and also present an orientation to this department’s online archival resources. He will also touch on how individuals can take steps to preserve their own physical and digital collections. The session will last approximately 90 minutes and will include a tour of the University Archives.

Offered through the Academy of Lifelong Learning; free and open to the public. Registration requested by 11/11/19 at #581-5114.

Join us for a ride in Eastern's "Wayback" machine. Fifty years ago, Professor of Botany Dr. Hiram Thut gave an illustrated talk entitled “EIU; Then and Now” to students in Pemberton Hall. The archived slides (now digitized) and an audio recording of a 1973 version of that lecture are the basis of this look back at Eastern from its 1899 campus plans through 1969 and today. Retired EIU faculty members Mac Corley, David Maurer, and Terry Weidner will offer commentary during the presentation.

Offered through the Academy of Lifelong Learning; free and open to the public.  Registration requested by 11/12/19 at 581-5114.

The manor, haunted by spirits and guilt, lives in the shadows of the past and the cries of the present. Mary, with the help of her new friends Martha, Dickon, Ben, and a key to a garden, begins to unlock the secrets of the house, helping all things grow.  Winner of 3 Tony’s 4 Drama Desk awards.
