Gee's Bend: The Quilters, Stories, Music, and Quilts

Wednesday, 19 March, 2014 @ 01:00 PM - 03:00 PM | Cost:FREE

View the exhibition of quilts at the newly restored Mattoon Train Depot. These bold and dynamic quilts by Gloria Hoppins, Lucy Mingo, Revil Mosely, China Pettway, Mary Ann Pettway, and Lucy Witherspoon, are on display during their week long visit to Mattoon. Arrive at the Depot by 1 p.m. to meet the quilters from this isolated community in southwest Alabama. In this sparsely populated rural area near the Alabama River, the women have created works of art admired and revered by galleries, museums, and collectors world wide. The women will present a program of stories and sacred songs of living in the rural south during the Great Depression, through the Civil Rights Movement, and into today. Quilted items from the Gee's Bend Quilt Collective will be available for purchase at a wide variety of prices. Refreshments will be provided.
