Mary Newcomb was 41 when she began four years of service to the Union. After burying her husband in Effingham, she cared for the “boys” on the western front. In the beginning, the Union Army was largely unprepared for mass casualties, and Newcomb struggled to meet soldiers’ needs in a military structure that resented her presence. She prevailed, and became a potent advocate for “the common man” in the ranks. Come learn about a local female war hero.
