In many ways, the lives of Edwin Booth, the greatest actor of his day; Abraham Lincoln; and John Wilkes Booth—Lincoln’s assassin and the brother of Edwin—crossed paths. Lincoln admired Edwin, John Wilkes hated Lincoln, and all three venerated Shakespeare. This course will discuss the many actual (and surprising) contacts between the Booth brothers and the president, as well as the deep chords of emotion Shakespeare evoked in all of them—the only thing they had in common.
