MEI RISE Chat - 'Mental Health, Drug Addiction, and the Prison Pipeline' |
MEI RISE Chat panelists will discuss the racial and socioeconomic inequalities of the criminal justice system, from targeted arrests to recidivism to attempts to reduce inequality through marijuana legalization. They will also cover the link between mental health issues and drug addiction (with a special mention of drug issues in Coles County) and note how some countries and US programs now promote mental health treatment options over prison for users.
Panelists: Fulbright Scholar and special guest Dr. Alonzo DeCarlo, Dr. Danessa Carter, Prof. Erin Rowland, and Elizabeth "Liz" Stephens

25,000 Orchids |
There are more than 25,000 species of orchids that form one of the most diverse, and arguably the largest, flowering plant family on Earth. They grow in almost every habitat imaginable and show an amazing amount diversity in their body plan as well as their reproductive strategies. This talk will focus on the features that tie orchids together as a family and introduce the vast range of variation in orchid diversity. Both topics will be heavily illustrated with photos of species studied by Dr. Carlsward. There will also be a more practical portion that will introduce some basics of orchid care indoors and a demonstration of how to repot your orchids. Directions provided to registered participants.

Workshop: Classrooms Without Walls, Creating Video Instruction at EIU |
Facilitator: Dr. Tom Grissom
Location: 1430 Buzzard Hall
This workshop will provide an overview of the extensive video production capabilities all faculty, staff, and students currently have access to at EIU. This session will provide a hands-on walk through of creating a basic screencast for instructional purposes. Once videos are created there will be a discussion of the many options available to upload and stream instructional videos to students. A green screen demonstration will also be provided, attend this session and be amazed by the possibilities available to everyone at EIU. (Bring a flash drive if you want to save your video.)
