Small and Rural School Networking Night |
Please plan to attend the Small and Rural Schools Networking Night scheduled for Wednesday, February 20th from 6:00-8:00 in Buzzard Hall 1501 and Atriums. We will begin in Buzzard Hall Auditorium with a very short presentation by a panel of teachers who will share their story and answering your questions about teaching in rural schools. Then there will be an opportunity to meet and network with principals and superintendents from small and rural schools across the region. We have approximately 20 districts from the region that will be present for this event (we will post a list of participating districts early next week to https://www.eiu.edu/rsi/ ). These schools are excited about the opportunity to meet students from all programs and all class levels in order to develop relationships for future volunteer experiences, practica, student teaching, and employment. These schools are coming specifically to meet and speak to you so please plan to attend for as much as your schedule allows. While this is primarily a networking night, you are encouraged to bring resumes.
This event is open to all teacher education majors so please share with friends, classmates, and with your instructors. I have attached a copy of the event flyer to share. Proof of attendance certificates will be provided.

Geology and Geography Unveils New Mineral Exhibit |
The Geology and Geography Department will be unveiling its new mineral display on Thursday, February 21st at 2 pm outside of PHY 2040. Some of the stars of this collection include meteorites - including one from the Moon! Additionally, this display boasts an autographed photo of Harrison Schmitt, the first and only scientist to have gone to the Moon. Dr. Schmitt holds the distinctions of being a geologist, university professor and former U.S. Senator as well as being the last living human to walk on the surface of the Moon. This display has been created from donations and specimen loans from Rick Smith at the Doe Run Mine, Geno Persico, Jake Crandall and Diane Burns as well as departmental purchases. The collection is intended to be used both academically as well as decoratively, with specimens being removed periodically from display so as to be incorporated into classroom demonstrations. Additionally, the display is open to the public for viewing during normal campus hours, and local schools have a standing invitation to set up instructional visits to enhance their curriculum.

This program is held in conjunction with Booth Library's spring exhibit, "On the Shoulders of Giants: The Moon and Beyond." For more information on the exhibit and programming series, visit https://library.eiu.edu/exhibits/space, and find Booth Library on Facebook and Twitter.
Feb. 21, 3:30 p.m., “Baby Steps to the Moon,” presented by Steve Daniels, chair, Department of Physics, Witters Conference Room 4440, Booth Library.
On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong stepped off of the Lunar Module and onto the surface of the Moon saying “One small step for a man”. That was during the Apollo 11 mission. But many small steps occurred during the previous Apollo missions to get to that point. I will discuss the Apollo program and the many steps that had never been taken before as we reached for our goal. Each of these steps were necessary preparation for Mr. Armstrong’s grand finale.
