Edible Book Festival |
Booth Library will sponsor its eighth annual Edible Book Festival on April 9 as part of National Library Week.
Anyone in the community may enter a work made out of edible materials that has something to do with books in either its shape or content. The artwork will not be eaten. To view entries from last year’s competition, go to http://thekeep.eiu.edu/ediblebook_2017/.
Participants may design an entry on any topic; however, this year’s contest will have a special “Theme Challenge”! This year’s theme is: PEEPS. (Please note that the theme challenge is intended as a starting point to inspire ideas and creativity; participation is optional.)
Entries may be installed at the library after 3 p.m. April 9. Public voting will take place from 4 to 5 p.m., with the winners announced shortly after. The event is free and open to the public.
Gift cards will be awarded to the winners of People’s Choice and Judges Choice. Honorable mention prizes also will be awarded.
There is no fee to participate in or view this show; however, those planning to enter the contest must pre-register by April 6. The entry form is available on the library website, http://www.library.eiu.edu/exhibits/edible-book/. For more information on the contest, call 581-8456.

Benjamin Hay, trumpet with Jonathan Bowman, piano |
The Department of Music at Eastern Illinois University is proud to present guest artist Benjamin Hay, trumpet, in a free recital at 7:30pm on Monday, April 9, 2018 in the Recital Hall of the Doudna Fine Arts Center. Assisted by collaborative pianist Dr. Jonathon Bowman, Mr. Hay will present a variety of works for trumpet by J.S. Bach, Kevin McKee, Adam Cuthbért, Michael Daugherty, and Peter Maxwell Davies.
Mr. Hay serves as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He holds degrees from Oklahoma State University and the University of New Mexico, and is in the process of completing his doctoral degree at The University of Oklahoma.

'Designs of Duty' exhibit |
“Designs of Duty,” an exhibit featuring East Central Illinois veterans and their service-related tattoos, will be on display at Booth Library from Jan. 22 through May 11, 2018.
“Designs of Duty” tells the stories of seven military veterans who served our country over a 45-year period throughout Asia and Europe. Veterans featured in the exhibit reside in Charleston, Newman, Nokomis, Olney, Shelbyville and Towanda.
Tattoos are a common symbol among the military, and this exhibit aims to explore the inspiration and meanings behind them, as well as the stories of the veterans themselves. Pride, patriotism and honor are common themes in the artwork chosen by the veterans showcased in “Designs of Duty.”
Related exhibits on display include military flags; “Symbols of Service,” featuring University of Illinois student veterans; aircraft nose art from World War II to today; Vietnam War helmet graffiti; and literature and poetry during wartime.

Spring Book Sale |
Booth Library will host its Spring Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 11 outside the south entrance of the library.
A large selection of books in all subject areas and hundreds of paperback fiction titles will be available for purchase. All items have been donated by the campus and local communities.
Library staff requests no sales in advance. The proceeds from the sale are used to enhance library programs and services.

Awards for Excellence reception |
The Library Advisory Board of Booth Library at Eastern Illinois University honored six students as winners of the 2018 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity. The students will be honored at a reception on April 11.
Award winners were:
-- Wonjin Song, an undergraduate in economics and mathematics, for his paper, “International Debt Impact on the Value of South Korean Currency”;
-- Junnatun Naym, an MBA student, for “Competition and Concentration in Banking Sector: Evidence from Bangladesh”;
-- George Anaman, a graduate student in economics, for “Willingness to Pay Student Insurance as a Primary Plan among Eastern Illinois University Students”;
-- Razak Dwomoh, a graduate student in elementary education, for “The Development and Implications of Social Studies and History Curricula in Ghana.”
Honorable mention awards were presented to:
-- O. Tomiwa Shodipe, a graduate student in economics, for “The Impact of Real Interest Rate on Real Exchange Rate: Empirical Evidence from Japan”;
-- Charity Huwe, a graduate student in curriculum and instruction, for “Representation of the Titanic in Children’s Literature.”
The Booth Library Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity program promotes and recognizes excellence in student research. The program encourages students to enhance their studies by utilizing the wealth of information available at Booth Library and other research venues.

All entries were original works completed by Eastern students within the last 12 months. The award recipients were selected on the basis of excellence, creativity and the use of research resources. Spring Writer's Workshop |
Past Forward Memoir Writers are celebrating their 10th anniversary with a workshop led by award winning novelist Amy Hassinger (Nina: Adolescence 2003, The Priest’s Madonna 2009, After the Dam 2016). Ms. Hassinger will be sharing insights on plot development in two interactive sessions useful to writers of fiction and creative nonfiction alike. Coffee and tea, a sandwich lunch and snacks are included in the registration fee. Space is limited to 30 participants, so register early to reserve your spot. Sponsored by Past Forward, Academy of Lifelong Learning, Coles County Arts Council and Mattoon Arts Council.
