In this powerful work about the tragic aftermath of the Vietnam War, author and Academy member, Michael Murphy presents the stories of Vietnamese people who fled their beloved country and those who stayed behind and endured, creating a new life in their ever-changing country. You will learn Michael's background and impetus for writing on this subject. There will be time for questions and answers for those interested in this war, culture, and the people left after 'Black April', 4/30/1975.

'Designs of Duty' exhibit |
“Designs of Duty,” an exhibit featuring East Central Illinois veterans and their service-related tattoos, will be on display at Booth Library from Jan. 22 through May 11, 2018.
“Designs of Duty” tells the stories of seven military veterans who served our country over a 45-year period throughout Asia and Europe. Veterans featured in the exhibit reside in Charleston, Newman, Nokomis, Olney, Shelbyville and Towanda.
Tattoos are a common symbol among the military, and this exhibit aims to explore the inspiration and meanings behind them, as well as the stories of the veterans themselves. Pride, patriotism and honor are common themes in the artwork chosen by the veterans showcased in “Designs of Duty.”
Related exhibits on display include military flags; “Symbols of Service,” featuring University of Illinois student veterans; aircraft nose art from World War II to today; Vietnam War helmet graffiti; and literature and poetry during wartime.

2018 EIUnity Conference: Changing the Culture for the Culture |
The 10th Annual EIUnity Diversity Conference will be held on Friday, February 2, 2018, from 8 AM-3 PM, in the EIU Martin Luther King Union. The theme for this year's conference is "Changing the Culture for the Culture: A Stand Against the Tradition of Bigotry, Social Injustice and more..." This conference is designed to raise diversity awareness and advocacy across EIU's campus. The conference registration and Safe Zone Training starts at 8 AM with workshops starting at 10 AM, and a luncheon provided during the conference. Story time |
Children ages 3 to 7 are invited to free story times in the Ballenger Teachers Center of Booth Library.
Story times are planned from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, and each will have a specific theme. The schedule is as follows:
- Jan. 27, Latino Culture, Three Kings Day, sponsored by Latino American Student Organization;
- Feb. 3, Valentine’s Day, sponsored by Math Energy Club;
- Feb. 10, Fun with Fairy Tales, presented by Ellen Corrigan, Booth Library;
- Feb. 24, Celebrating Special, sponsored by Sigma Rho Epsilon;
- March 3, Dr. Seuss, sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi.
Programs will feature stories, crafts and activities. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
