Applied Environmental Geographic Informational System
The AEGIS computer lab is used to conduct environmental studies with a Geographic Information System. The lab provides modern tools and techniques for teaching, research and training environmental biologists. The lab is used by students and faculty to study and better understand environmental issues such as:
- Land use changes
- Land fragmentation
- Protection of threatened species
- Protection of ecosystems
- Urban expansion
- Pollution movement.
AEGIS Equipment Includes the Following
- GPS receivers and antenna
- ArcGIS software, including:
- ArcMap®, used primarily to view, edit, create, and analyze geospatial data. ArcMap allows the user to explore data within a data set, symbolize features accordingly and create maps.
- ArcCatalog®, which provides an integrated and unified view of all the data files, databases and ArcGIS documents available to ArcGIS users.
- ArcGlobe®, allowing users to view and analyze very large amounts of 3D GIS data seamlessly and with extremely fast display speeds. ArcGlobe literally presents a globe of the earth over which users can navigate easily in three dimensions. Users can "drill" quickly from a planetary view to a high-resolution close-in examination of whatever terrain on earth they choose and have access to the associated data tables.
- ArcScene®, which allows you to overlay many layers of data in a 3D environment. Features are placed in 3D by reading height information from feature geometry, feature attributes, layer properties, or a defined 3D surface. Every layer in the 3D view can be handled differently.
