EIU Department of Art + Design

Students in the Department of Art & Design at Eastern Illinois University enjoy access to dedicated faculty, exceptional facilities and excellent career preparation.

The art department offers both Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree programs. In addition to its exceptional undergraduate degree offerings, the department offers unique graduate programs: Master of Arts (MA) Studio Art, Master of Arts (MA) Art Education or Community Arts options.

The BFA degree program has options in art education, graphic design, and art studio with emphasis in either two-dimensional media or three-dimensional media. The BA degree program has options in art history and art studio with emphasis in either two-dimensional media or three-dimensional media. More information regarding each degree option is available on that option's program page, found under the "Degrees / Options" tab in the top menu bar.

Each option is designed to provide the student with in-depth experience and knowledge in a variety of studio techniques, art theories and historical perspectives. Eastern Illinois University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Foundations

The art education option provides professional training and art studio experiences leading to teacher licensure in art for grades K – 12. Click here for more information on this program.

Graphic Design

The graphic design option allows students to develop creative and technical skills in visual communication concepts and time-based media. The option has a selective admissions program for advancement to the junior and senior years. Click here for more information on this program.

2D Studio

The studio option with two-dimensional emphasis offers students the opportunity to study various 2D studio media. Studio classes are offered in drawing, painting, printmaking and digital art. Instruction in the studio processes is done with an emphasis on creativity, craftsmanship, application and understanding of design principle, and safety. Studio Art 3D

The studio option with three-dimensional emphasis offers the student the opportunity to study various 3D studio media. Studio classes are offered in ceramics, metalsmithing/jewelry, and sculpture. Instruction in the studio processes is done with an emphasis on creativity, craftsmanship, application and understanding of design principle, and safety.
