INTRODUCTION
Hi, I'm Nikki Hillier. I have been at EIU since 2015. I teach graduate courses in leadership, ethics, and health policy, and I coordinate internship and graduate programming across four degree tracks in EIU's Department of Public Health and Nutrition. My favorite part of this work is connecting students to the profession through internship placements, conference participation, and hands-on research. I teach a health professions course as well as reasearch methods and health administation.
My research focuses on public health experiential learning and how students build practitioner skills in applied settings. Recent projects have taken me into WIC food policy and vaccine hesitancy at the community level, mentoring students through this work.
Research & Creative Interests
My research examines community health issues where policy and behavior intersect. Current and recent projects include:
- WIC food package changes: analyzing redemption patterns in Central Illinois in partnership with the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District
- Vaccine hesitancy: exploring community-level factors that shape uptake and refusal
- Public health experiential learning: developing and studying the structures that connect classroom preparation to field practice
