One-Day Getaway Just Minutes from Charleston Following Route 130 south, Greenup is the next town you will encounter after Charleston. Begin your trip by scouting out the area to see which shops are available and to plan a mini-itinerary for your day. Once you’ve decided where you want to go, then park your car in the Free Public Parking lot located at the corner of Cumberland and Mill Streets. Take a look around the historical society (converted from an old railroad depot). This can be found in the same block as the Free Public Parking. Why not get a picture of yourself or a friend standing by the piece of railroad track and the railroad crossing sign? Walk up and down Cumberland Street, a part of the historic National Road, and take a trip back in time. See the 19 th century “Wild West” style porches, and have a sit-down dinner at the Western-themed Stockyards bar and grill. Stroll around and explore the various antique shops that Greenup offers. A word of caution: these shops can be “hit and miss” with their hours, so begin your trip early and plan to check them all out. After you’ve seen downtown Greenup, hop back in your car and follow Cumberland Street down past the old artesian well and fairgrounds to the rustic Covered Bridge. Drive through the Covered Bridge (slowly because it is one-lane) and turn around at the observation point just past the bridge. Drive back through the bridge and turn right onto Mill Road (not to be confused with Mill Street in downtown Greenup), and relax with a glass of wine at Cameo Vineyards. This winery’s wood cabin with wraparound porch offers a spectacular view of the vineyards in the summertime. They also carry a selection of homemade wines ranging from white to red, and dry to sweet. If steakhouses and wineries aren’t your style, then try Pank’s Pizza: “Pizza with a Smile.” This independent pizza business features friendly employees and a cozy atmosphere. If you are into crafts, then check out the Quilter’s Niche. This small quilting shop offers fabric quarters, quilting supplies, and various threads and yarns. And speaking of yarns, you’re guaranteed to hear a good one if you drop by either of the local gas stations or the Dairy Queen on the north end of town of an evening. |
