In collaboration with Minority Mentoring in Mathematics and Sciences and with Women Exploring Business and Technology at EIU, WiSM hosted a panel discussion of professionals in the Illinois and recent EIU graduates to discuss what employers are looking for during the interview process and what you should be looking for as a prospective employee.

In collaboration with Minority Mentoring in Mathematics and Sciences and with Women Exploring Business and Technology at EIU, WiSM hosted a discussion led by Dr. Sherry Yennello from Texas A & M University about getting the most out of your college experience as a student by taking advantage of mentoring opportunities.

Overcoming Barriers: Diverse Women in Science at EIU, Spring 2011

This Spring, Booth Library hosted a Booth After Hours event where faculty and students from China, Nepal, India, Serbia and the United States gave inspirational talks about their life as women in science and the barriers they faced during their careers.  There were lots of great raffle prizes given away, wonderful treats to be eaten and overall everyone had a great time!

Dr. Linda Birnbaum, Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, gave a thought-provoking presentation about how to balance your life as a scientist, mom, and active community member. She also discussed on-going research at the NIEHS.

Building Credentials for Careers in Science and Math, Fall 2009

This fall we had three focus sessions at our event:

  • Debbie Endsley, Career Services Counselor, talked about steps you need to take to build your credentials.
  • Pam Levine, Pre-Health Professions advisor, talked about applying to health professional programs and graduate school.
  • Pam Ortega, Assistant Professor in Library Services, talked about getting started in preparing for entrance exams.

Pursuing a Career in Science and Math, Spring 2009

This spring we had three presentations at our career event:

  • Dr. Jennifer Crawford, Senior Scientific Aerotek recruiter, gave a presentation on employment opportunities (slides coming soon).
  • Pam Levine (Health Professions advisor) gave a presentation on health professional qualifying exams, and Pam Ortega (Reference Librarian) gave a presentation on the many resources Booth Library has to offer for graduate school qualifying exams.
  • Dr. Jennifer Roberts, Exponent Senior Scientist, gave a presentation on internships and summer job opportunities.

Dr. Sheila Bailey, Senior Physicist from NASA, gave a presentation in which she gave us insights into how desperately women are needed in engineering, science, and mathematics.
