Come out to EIU's fifth annual MLK Day of Service and make a difference in your local community! The annual event honors Dr. King’s legacy and is an opportunity for Americans to renew their own personal vows of citizenship through service to others.

Volunteers are asked to check-in on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, from 11-11:30 a.m. in the University Ballroom. Service projects will last from 12-4 p.m. Please make sure to bring a sack lunch with you! All transportation will be provided! Individuals can sign up for any event by clicking here! Groups of 10 volunteers or more, may contact Rachel Fisher at volunteer@eiu.edu. Please make sure to include your group name, number of volunteers and top three projects.

Below is a list of available events (in no particular order):

Hunger Relief

Volunteers will work side by side with RSVP volunteers to package meals which will be delivered in late January to Haiti. Volunteers should come prepared to stand during the meal packaging and wheat may be used. This is a great fun way to learn more about international and local food relief. Time will also be included to discuss local initiatives! This will be a very rewarding, hands-on experience! Click here to sign up for this event!

Douglas Hart Nature Center

Get ready to help our planet! Volunteers will work indoors and outdoors (weather pending) in helping our local nature center. This is a great way to give back and help in conservation efforts. Please dress appropriately. Please dress according to the weather since this event may be outdoors. Click here to sign up for this event!

Hospice Helpers

Volunteers will work to create items used by Alzheimer’s patients involved in local hospice care. Items will also patients to work on tactile stimulation. Come and help make a difference for a local community member. Click here to sign up for this event!

Grandma's Got Gmail

Volunteers will work with active seniors in our community who need support with various technology gadgets including iPads, iPhone and basic set-up for Facebook and email. Do you enjoy working with seniors? Looking to begin a semester of service? This is a great opportunity! A basic training is included and then you will start helping seniors connect! This semester based program offers more opportunities based on your individual schedule. Click here to sign up for this event!

Dance Off!

Volunteers will work with local youth in k-5 to provide a fun afternoon of dancing and learning! Volunteers are encouraged to have experience or high comfort with
dancing and interacting with youth! Various activities will take place. Dress in comfortable clothing and EIU gear. Click here to sign up for this event!

Birthday Card Blitz

In partnership with Big Brothers, Big Sisters – volunteers will create personalized birthday cards for local youth involved in this dynamic program. Come ready to be creative and have fun! Standing Stone: Extreme Agency Makeover

Volunteers are asked to help lend a hand at this new agency here in Charleston. Volunteers are needed to help sort through donations, clean, paint and more! This is a great way to part of a grassroots movement to improve the community around us! Click here to sign up for this event!
