Every day, countless people experience a crisis in their life. A crisis can range from a natural disaster to an unplanned pregnancy to a job loss. Helping those who are in the most need can be a very rewarding experience. Volunteer today for one of the following agencies and make a difference for someone in need.

American Red Cross

If you like to help people, you have come to the right place. The Red Cross is recruiting volunteers to be trained and ready to respond to disasters. The Red Cross involves annually matching knowledge, skills, interests and experiences of individuals with opportunities to serve their community. Your American Red Cross needs you!

Volunteers are needed to assist with blood drives and local relief efforts.

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities agencies throughout the country are an integral part of the safety net that keeps people from utter destitution. We provide a continuum of services — food, shelter, supportive housing, clothing, financial assistance, and other forms of help — that give people a leg up when life has knocked them down.

Volunteers are needed to help with clothes sorting, cleaning, box break down, and general maintenance work. Volunteers are also needed to help with special events and projects.

Habitat for Humanity

The world is experiencing a global housing crisis. According to the United Nations, about 1.6 billion people live in sub-standard housing. Another 100 million are homeless. In the United States alone, 95 million people — one-third of the nation — has housing problems, including mortgage payments making up too large a percentage of their income, overcrowding, poor quality shelter and homelessness. Throughout the world, people live in inadequate housing, and Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing decent, affordable homes for those in need.

Volunteers are needed to serve on work-site crews, committees, and assist with various fundraisers.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price.  Habitat for Humanity ReStores are proudly owned and operated by local Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and proceeds are used to build homes, community, and hope locally and around the world.

Volunteers are needed to help sort donations, stock, etc.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army of Coles and Cumberland Counties is proud to say it has been supplying services to the needy in Mattoon since 1895. From ringing the bell at Salvation Army kettles during the Christmas season to working with young people in character-building activities, Salvation Army volunteers run the gamut of service in every Army program. There are approximately 3.5 million volunteers registered with The Salvation Army in the U.S.

Volunteers are needed to help organize and run the thrift store and assist in the food pantry. Also seasonal volunteers are needed for ringing bells during the holiday season.

Standing Stone / Carpenters Table

Standing Stone is a local non-profit ministry which provides clothing and other items to people in need. Standing Stone has recently expanded to add a second location which has a food pantry, household items, and furniture.

Crisis Pregnancy Center

Crisis Pregnancy Center is available 24/7 to listen to individual concerns and questions concerning pregnancy, abortion and related issues. 260 West Locust Ave., Charleston, IL

Sexual Assault Counseling & Information Service (SACIS)

Sexual Assault Counseling and Information Service (SACIS) provides crisis and on-going services to victims of sexual assault, sexual abuse, and sexual harassment. Counseling services are also available to the victims' significant others (parents/guardians, siblings, spouses, etc.). Services include individual and group counseling, medical and criminal justice advocacy, information and referral, institutional advocacy, public education and professional training.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including: work on 24-hour crisis line, assist with elementary programs, advocacy, fundraising, and much more! Training is required and provided. Coalition for People in Need

The mission of the Coalition is to assist people who need financial assistance for emergency situations such as food, utilities, medical, etc. The CPN has been open for over 20 years and has helped over 6,000 clients over the past 6 years.

Volunteers are needed to greet and sign in clients and help them through the paperwork. After gaining experience, volunteers will serve as interviewers and would meet with clients one-on-one. The CPN is open Monday through Friday from 4 - 5:30 p.m.
