MLK Day of Service 2013

Come out to EIU's 4th annual MLK Day of Service and make a difference in your local community! The annual event honors Dr. King’s legacy and is an opportunity for Americans to renew their own personal vows of citizenship through service to others.

Volunteers are asked to check-in on Monday January 21, 2013 from 12:00pm-12:30pm in the University Ballroom. Service projects will last from 1pm-4pm. Please make sure to bring a sack lunch with you! All transportation will be provided! Individuals can sign up for any event by clicking here!  Groups  of 10 volunteers or more, may contact Rachel Fisher at volunteer@eiu.edu.  Please make sure to include your group name, number of volunteers and top three projects. 

 

Below is a list of available events (in no particular order):

 

Arcola Sports Day 

Volunteers will travel to Arcola IL and help at a Sports Fun Day. Volunteers will work in teams of two and work with kids in grades 3-6. This is a great way to share your love of sports and enthusiasm with local Arcola Youth. This will be a very rewarding, hands-on experience!  Click Here to sign up for this event!

 

Douglas Hart Nature Center

Volunteers will come out and explore Douglas Hart Nature Center. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of tasks including seed sorting, clearing brush, and various crafts. This is a fun way to gain a better understanding of the conservation movement. Please dress according to the weather since this event will be outdoors. Click Here to sign up for this event!Logo

 

Teddy Bear Makers

Volunteers are needed to help stuff and sew together teddy bears that will be given out to pediatric patients in the emergency and pediatric areas. Grab a friend and sign up early as this event fills up quickly! Click Here to sign up for this event!

 

Catholic Charities

Volunteers will help sort donations and clothing in part of this annual power sort. This is a really fun way to make a difference. Click Here to sign up for this event!

 

Charleston Rehab

Volunteers will travel to Charleston Rehab and play games with seniors. Games include board games, card games, and Nintendo Wii. Help make an impact in Charleston today. Click Here to sign up for this event!

 

Birthday Boxes

Let's help local youth celebrate their birthday!  Volunteers will help create personalized birthday cards and party boxes for local youth.  This is a fun way to give back on this MLK Jr. Day of Service!  Click Here to sign up for this event!

  

Support African Orphans 

Lend a hand to a very important international cause!  The Adonia Child Care Center is a program of the Victors Church in Namugoga, a small village in rural Uganda.  The aim is simple: to provide for the needs of children orphaned by AIDS and the extended civil unrest in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country.  Volunteers will work to make care packages for these youth as well as brainstomr on some future projects.  Click Here to sign up for this event!

 

Standing Stone

Senior Support
