Scholarships

The Department of Theatre Arts awards several types of scholarships, most of which require service to the department. Applicants may receive other financial aid through the University, but the entire amount of financial aid (including scholarships) cannot exceed the cost of attendance established by the Financial Aid Office.

2013 - 2014 Excellence in Fine Arts (EFA) Scholarship:  Applications and recommendation forms must be in the Theater Arts Office (DFAC 2080) no later than 4 p.m., February 22, 2013, with mandatory audition/interviews March 5, 2011, by appointment. We will contact you with an appointment time after March 2, 2013. At the interview/ audition, applicants will present two one-minute monologues of contrasting nature along with 16 bars of music if they would like to include that talent. Those interested in the technical aspect of theatre should bring a portfolio with pictures and/or examples of work. Applicants should also be prepared to discuss their part in productions. 2013 - 2014 Gerald Sullivan/Marjorie Ingram Griffin Scholarships:  Applications and recommendation forms must be in the Theatre Arts Office (DFAC 2080) no later than 4 p.m., April 5, 2013.    There are no interviews or auditions required for these scholarships, decision will be made by a committee based on the information you provide and the recommendations received.    

The Excellence in Fine Arts (EFA) - freshmen only

The Talented Student Award (TSA) - not available to freshmen

The Gerald E. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship - junior/senior status

The Marjorie Ingram Griffin Scholarship - junior/senior status

General Instructions and Forms

The Excellence in Fine Arts Award (EFA)

The EFA scholarship (in the form of tuition assistance) is awarded only to outstanding and promising incoming freshmen who declare a major in Theatre Arts and register for a minimum of 15 semester hours. It is renewable for the recipient's entire four years, assuming he/she retains the theatre arts major and maintains a cumulative 2.5 GPA overall and a 3.0 GPA in the department. Recipients are required to either audition for a role or interview for a technical/design position for each production. Recipient agrees to provide service to the department for up to 50 hours per production in the form of taking a role and/or working as a member of a production crew.  The award is paid in increments at the beginning of each semester.

The Talented Student Award (TSA)

TSA scholarships (usually in the form of tuition assistance) are awarded to promising and dedicated students who agree to work in one of the following areas: costumes, lighting, set construction or the office. The student must be a declared Theatre Arts major or minor.  The award is made as a block grant at the beginning of each semester. Although the TSA is seldom awarded to entering freshman, exceptions are possible for outstanding individuals with work experience in one of the areas mentioned above. The TSA is renewable from one year to the next as long as recipients maintain their grades and the quality of their contributions to the department and resubmit their application and recommendations.

The Gerald E. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to junior or senior declared Theatre Arts majors on the basis of outstanding contributions to the Department of Theatre Arts and potential for success in a theatre career. Awards are determined on the basis of applications and recommendations in the spring prior to the awarding of the scholarship. The awards committee may elect to grant two awards (pending availability of funds).

The Marjorie Ingram Griffin Scholarship 

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student accepted to Eastern Illinois University as a declared Theatre Arts major seeking teacher certification. The recipient shall have an overall 3.0 GPA and a class standing of junior or senior at the time the scholarship is paid. Awards are determined on the basis of interest received in the scholarship account and the recipient is selected on the basis of application and recommendations received in the spring prior to the starting of the scholarship for fall semester.

The Grant in Aid Award (GIA)

The GIA scholarships (in the form of tuition assistance) are awarded to promising and dedicated students who agree to work in one of the following areas: costumes, lighting, set construction or the office.   Students must be either a declared Theatre Arts major or minor.  The award is made as a block grant at the beginning of each semester.   The GIA is renewable from one year to the next as long as recipients maintain their grades and the quality of contributions to the department.   Contact Damita Lewis at 217) 581-5918 for more information on the award.

General Instructions and Forms

To receive any of these awards, applicants must be full-time students with a declared major or minor in Theater Arts. Auditions/interviews for awards are normally held in the spring semester for the following fall semester awards. Applicants for multiple scholarships should ask recommenders to send a separate recommendation form/letter of recommendation for each award. Wording changes are not required.

Recommenders may submit recommendations by downloading the recommendation form, completing it and sending it via the "Submit" button at bottom of form.  Recommenders can also mail or fax responses to the address/FAX number on our main webpage.   If you have any problems submitting the forms, please contact the Theatre Department.
