  Course Offering

The bachelor of science degree in the Career & Organizational Studies Program prepares career-minded working adults to assume professional roles in corporate or not-for-profit organizations. The degree program is particularly well suited for working adults interested in obtaining supervisory, managerial, and leadership positions. The Career and Organizational Studies Program has two main concentrations of study: 1) Supervisory and Leadership; and 2) Training and Development

Supervision and Leadership : This concentration is specifically designed to provide students with the skills necessary to be successful in supervisory, managerial, or leadership positions within for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

Training and Development : This concentration provides a focus of study to enhance one's knowledge base and skill level of human resource development attracting those aspiring to gain positions within HRM or HRD departments in for-profit or not-for-profit organizations.

COS 1000 Portfolio Development

Instruction and practice in identifying and preparing written descriptions of college-level workplace learning. Students learn to use portfolio guidelines and other reference material. Structured learning experiences introduce students to processes used to develop portfolios.

COS 4275 Career & Organizational Studies Internship

Experience includes job skills and knowledge, management-worker relations, supervised instruction conferences and evaluations. One semester hour per semester, up to a maximum of 15 semester hours, will be awarded for directed work experience internships. (1 to 15 sh)

COS 4300 Special Studies in Career & Organizational Studies

Provides opportunity for in-depth study of selected problems in occupational education for which there is not an established course. May be taken for credit only once. (3 sh)

COS 4800 Strategies and Processes of Teaching and Training

Application of strategies of teaching and training, presentation skills, lesson planning, and instructional technologies such as experiential learning, problem solving, simulation, computerized instruction, and lecturettes for vocational teachers and human resource development trainers. (3 sh)

COS 4810 Principles of Career Development

The nature, purpose, and philosophy of career education as it relates to the career development of individuals. Includes an overview of various levels of career development and the contributions various career development theories make to a total program of career development. Contemporary problems and issues in career development. (3 sh)

COS 4820 Sociotechnical Design

A study, from the worker's perspective, of how technology affects social processes in occupational environments; human resource development; sociotechnical and open system theories; diagnosing occupational systems; change strategies; and the worker's adaptation of occupational settings to changing environmental demands. (3 sh)

COS 4830 Organizational Perspectives: Past, Present, & Future

This course involves the study of the nature of organizations from varying perspectives including historical, philosophical, technological, psychological and sociological. The course also includes prospects and directions for the future. (3 sh)

COS 4835 Supervision in Organizations

The study of the theories, principles, and practices of supervision in organizations, emphasizing how supervisors organize an effective work unit, initiate change, stimulate individual or group performance, and cope with workplace dynamics. (3 sh)

COS 4840 Training Program Development

This course is a study of the knowledge and field of practice associated with developing employer sponsored learning programs for the purpose of improving the on-the-job work performance aligned to business needs. This course focuses on how to establish and implement training programs in public and private sectors' organizations, with an emphasis on establishing positive client relationships, conducting needs assessment, developing training program proposals, designing training programs, developing training budgets, providing financial analysis and fiscal justifications, as well as conducting program evaluations and impact assessments. (3 sh)

COS 4850 Behavior Based Interviewing

Research indicates past behaviors and performances are excellent indicators of future behaviors and performances. Behavior based interviewing strategies predict whether the candidate will be worthy of a hire. As a candidate, knowing behavior based strategies will help prevent sabotaging your employment opportunities. (1 sh)

COS 4850 Conflict in the Workplace

This course will help supervisors, training and development professionals and educators understand the nature of conflict and the positive outcomes of conflict. Emphasis will be placed on helping participants analyze their conflict situations, plan a conflict resolution strategy, and acquire the communication skills needed to execute their strategy effectively. (3 sh)

COS 4850 Developing Effective Web-Based Instruction

This goal of this course is to teach training and development and information technology professionals how to design, develop, and manage web-based training (WBT) programs that will deliver measurable results for organizations. This course will provide the fundamental principles behind quality instruction, interface design, project management and program evaluation. (3 sh)

COS 4850 Ethical Decision Making

Ethical decisions come into play in all business organizations and within our everyday life situations. This course examines how we define an ethical dilemma and the processes used to help alleviate the pressure and stress we endure when faced with an ethical career and business related dilemma. Resources will be identified that can be used to examine and choose appropriate responses in difficult situations. (1 sh)

COS 4850 Quality Processes in the Workplace

This course is the study of the major theorists, principles and tools related to Quality Management and the development of Learning Organizations. Emphasis is placed on group processes, quality improvement tools and problem-solving techniques. This course is designed for persons with little to no background in quality principles. (3 sh)

COS 4860 Facilitating Learning and Project Groups

People at all organizational levels accomplish their work alongside and through others. A fundamental workplace competency is the capacity to facilitate learning and project groups. Participants will practice facilitation principles and strategies, including how to deal with common facilitation problems. (3 sh)

COS 4870 Developing Critical Thinking

People in the workplace are increasingly expected to think critically about their work rather than simply follow a supervisor's instructions. Participants will explore and apply principles of critical thinking to the workplace, classroom, and training room. (3 sh)

COS 4880 Productive Work Teams

The multiple roles and responsibilities needed to function effectively in productive work teams are stressed by being a member of class teams and studying teams. This highly experiential, research-based, and applications-oriented course emphasizes assessment of self, team effectiveness, and organizational readiness for teams. (3 sh)

COS 4890 Accelerated Training & Learning

Training and development specialists are addressing the needs of the learning organization. The focus of training is shifting from how people are trained to how people learn. A set of training technologies that accelerate learning has emerged. Participants will study: learning theories and paradigms; brain-related instructional design; style-flexing to accommodate cultural and learning-style diversity; and experiential and accelerated technologies. (3 sh)
