School Programs

Education and outreach programming designed for public school populations is a major focus for the Tarble Arts Center. These programs serve as a valuable classroom resource for east-central Illinois schools. They are funded in part by Tarble Arts Center membership contributions, the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and other co-sponsors.

Fifth Grade Enrichment

A tour/studio program, the Fifth Grade Enrichment is offered during the fall and spring for area fifth grade classes. In this half-day program, students view and discuss objects on exhibition, and then apply some of the information learned through a hands-on art project. Subjects frequently deal with the culture and customs of other countries and civilizations, and "enrich" subjects taught in the classroom. Registration for this free program begins in June for the fall enrichment and in November for the spring enrichment.

Junior/Senior High Art Enrichment

The Junior/Senior High Art Enrichment Program combines a tour and studio experience, and is offered free of charge to junior and senior high school Art classes in the seven county area. Over a two and one-half hour visit students tour an exhibition, are exposed to new vocabulary and concepts, and create an original art work using challenging techniques and materials. To insure the quality of the experience, group size is limited to approximately twenty-five students.

Arts-in-Education Artist Residency

Through this program designed and supported by the Illinois Arts Council (IAC), a professional artist works with students in the classroom. The artist is selected from a roster compiled by the IAC, and spends one week at each participating school. New approaches, concepts and media are emphasized. A one-month program held each spring, the Arts-in-Education residency is built upon a collaboration between participating public schools, the Illinois and Coles County Arts Councils, and the Tarble. Teachers interested in becoming involved in future residency programs should contact the Curator of Education in November for the following school year.

Children's Art Exhibition

The annual Children's Art Exhibition is held at the Tarble Arts Center in May, and provides an opportunity for area art teachers to showcase their programs. Organized in cooperation with the art teachers of Community Unit #1 Schools, this exhibition features works in a variety of art media by area K-12th grade students. Exhibition participation packages are mailed to Art teachers in October.

Teachers' In-Service Workshops

The Tarble hosts a half-day teacher's institute each fall in October, organized in cooperation with the Regional Office of Education. The program includes information about education programs and a hands-on workshop, all offered free of charge to area teachers. The Tarble also works cooperatively in presenting the Media & Methods in Art conference presented each March by the Art Department and the School of Adult and Continuing Education.

Tours of Exhibition

Docent-led tours are available throughout the year for most exhibitions. These guided tours provide a structured opportunity to learn and discuss the art exhibited. Arrangements for tours should be made a minimum of two weeks in advance of the tour date requested. In addition to schools, docent-led tours are also available to youth and civic groups.
