Eastern Illinois University's Sociology-Anthropology Club is a place for all Sociology and Anthropology students, and those interested in Sociology or Anthropology, to meet and discuss topics related to these subjects. Discussion can range from world events, academic pursuits, and social institutions to local service organizations and volunteering opportunities within the community.
Anyone with an interest in Sociology or Anthropology, or just an interest in social work or volunteering, is encouraged to come.
Sociology is the systematic and scientific study of human society and interaction at all levels. This can be from the individual level, with case studies of a specific segment of the population, to mass studies of countries and culture on a global scale. Sociology emerged in the 19th century and the term was originally coined by the French philosopher Auguste Comte.
Sociology has many subdisciplines for students to specialize in. These can include -- but are not limited to -- deviance and crime, stratification, politics, aging, education, work and occupations, collective behavior and organizations, environment, media and pop culture, social psychology, race and ethnic relations, comparative sociology, urban and rural sociology, and sociological methods and theory.
Sociology also has practical applications, especially, in the social work, criminology and corrections fields. A sociological perspective can also be useful in other fields as well, such as urban planning and renewal, customer/client relations, policy development, politics, industrial relations, advocacy and all levels of critical thinking and global citizenship.
