The discipline and profession of sociology is guided
and governed by the American Sociological Association (ASA). The ASA
publishes the top tier journals in the profession (e.g., American Sociological
Review, American Journal of Sociology), articulates the code of ethics,
informs sociologists of issues in the profession and organizes annual
conferences for the dissemination and presentation of current research.

The ASA is the national parent organization of the profession. There
are also regional organizations that serve and represent the profession.
Eastern Illinois University is located within the regional bounds of
the Midwest Sociological Society (MSS). The MSS publishes The Sociological
Quarterly, a mid-tier professional journal. Most of the sociology faculty
participate in MSS annual conferences. Over the past several years,
undergraduates have been participating in MSS conferences, presenting
their research in paper and posster sessions. For more, visit: http://www.themss.org
Finally, the profession is organized into, and represented
by state organizations. The Illinois Sociological Association (ISA)
is one of the largest in the nation, with some 120 members. An annual
conference facilitates a congregation of sociologists and students from
Illinois and surrounding states for the presentation of research and
consideration of issues impacting the discipline and deparment.
