In celebration of African American heritage Month, the Black Student Union would like to extend an invitation to the EIU community to attend the 51st Annual Miss Black EIU Scholarship Pageant 2024, “Shades of an Ebony Queen”.

This year's theme, "Shades of an Ebony Queen," is a tribute to the diverse spectrum of beauty, strength, and independence among women of African descent at EIU, as they express their inner radiance and regality.

The MBEIU Scholarship Pageant 2024 will showcase three exceptional African American women vying for scholarships, prizes, special accolades, and the prestigious title of Miss Black EIU 2024.

About the Miss Black EIU Scholarship Pageant

For fifty years, the Black Student Union at Eastern Illinois University has proudly sponsored the annual Miss Black EIU Scholarship Pageant. This event stands as a cornerstone of African American Heritage Month celebrations, embodying a rich cultural legacy.

Since its inception in 1971, the pageant has served as a platform for celebrating African American culture, heritage, and achievements. It has empowered countless Black women, fostering pride, gratitude, and cultural understanding. Over the years, numerous contestants have embraced the opportunity to compete for the crown, eager to represent Eastern's African American community as the next Miss Black EIU.

 

2024 Miss Black EIU Contestants

Samaria Rosenthal 

Samaria Rosenthal

Miss Samaria Rosenthal is the daughter of Damos and Gloria Rosenthal. She is from Kankakee, Illinois. Samaria is a senior at EIU majoring in Psychology with a minor in Public Health. Samaria aspires to become an Elementary School Counselor and open her own practice.

Her extracurricular activities at EIU include: President of Trio Ambassadors, a member of the Black Student Union, and Psychology Club.

Samaria would like to acknowledge God, family, and friends, for all their love and support. She would like to thank her MBEIU Pageant sisters and MBEIU Pageant Coordinators for believing in and supporting her throughout her preparations for the MBEIU Scholarship Pageant 2024.

Destinee Danielle Patterson

Destinee Danielle Patterson

Miss Destinee Danielle Patterson is the daughter of Ms. LaChonda (Lashawnda) Patterson and Granddaughter of Ms. Lisa Patterson. She is from Richton Park, Illinois. Destinee is a junior majoring in Secondary Education in English Language Arts at EIU. Destinee aspires to work as a professor in higher education.

Her extracurricular activities at EIU include: member of the Kat Walk Modeling Agency and NAACP.

Destinee wants to take the opportunity to thank God for his Grace, Mercy and Love. She also would like to thank her parents for their continuous support and Dylan her little brother for believing in her.

Personal Motto To Live By Life Is: 10% What Happens To You And 90% What You Make Happen.

Rafiat Oludotun Yarrow 

Rafiat Oludotun Yarrow

Ms. Rafiat Oludotun Yarrow is the daughter of Tawa and Rafiu Yarrow and is from Hazel Crest, Illinois. She is a Senior at EIU majoring in Political Science with a minor in Women and Gendered Studies. Rafiat aspires to own a non-profit organization and to run for political office in congress.

Rafiat’s extracurricular activities at EIU include: President of the Omicron Delta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and a member of the Black Student Union.

Rafiat would like to thank her family, friends and ΖΦΒ Sorority Inc. sisters that have helped her in all her endeavors none of which, would have been possible without their help and support.
