The Graduate Assistant is one of four in the Student Life Office. The graduate assistants work under the general supervision of the Director of Student Life, with additional supervision by the Assistant Director of Student Life.

Responsibilities include overseeing the advisement of the University Board, the entertainment board, Multicultural Programs - Black Student Union, Latin-American Student Organization, Diversity in Action Council, LEAD, Student Government, Student Volunteerism, Student Organizational Leadership Services and Major University Events—major concert events, Back To School, First Night, Homecoming Week, Family Weekend, Up All Night, and Spring Fling.

  1. Advisement of up to (3) University Board entertainment sub-committees on all aspects of selection, negotiation, promotion, budgeting, implementation, and evaluation of student programs. Monitor the programs and services of each sub-committee and provide staff advisement regarding sub-committee recruitment and retention. Provide on-site supervision at programming events.
  2. Co-Advisement of (1) major Multicultural Programming Area – Diversity in Action Council (DAC), Learning By Example to Accept Diversity (L.E.A.D.), etc., on all aspects of the selection, promotion, budgeting, implementation, evaluation and marketing of multicultural programs and events. Monitor multicultural programming areas and provide staff advisement regarding student involvement, recruitment and retention. Provide on-site supervision at programming events.
  3. Co-Advisement of (1) Multicultural Student Organization - Black Student Union (BSU) and Latin-American Student Organization (LASO), including Executive Officers & Cabinet Directors, Committee Chairs; and multicultural programs which include BSU Week, Miss Black EIU Pageant, Multicultural Fashion Show, Mahogany Awards Ceremony and other related events/programs. Oversee the coordination of leadership training opportunities for multicultural student leaders, officers and provide staff advisement.
  4. Assist in the planning and coordination of campus-wide cultural celebrations such as Latino Heritage Month, African-American Heritage Celebration, Native-American Week, Asian-American Week, International Student Week and Women's History and Awareness Month.
  5. Develop an understanding of University and Business Office Policies/Procedures, Student Fee Budget and Allocation Processes, as they relate to the operation of Student Fee budgets and programming areas advised.
  6. Assist in the development of leadership training, retreats and support services for student leaders and organizations advised.
  7. Advisement of up to (3) EIU Homecoming Week Sub-committees on all aspects of the planning and implementation of major Homecoming Week activities and events. Sub-committees include Coronation, Panther Pride, Community Service, Activities, Publicity, Elections, Parade, Booklet, and Kick-off.
  8. Develop an understanding and working knowledge of the Entertainment Industry - negotiation, marketing budgetary and contractual processes necessary for the implementation of Student Life programs and events.
  9. Assist in the advisement of Major University Events and Programs (i.e., Fall/Spring Concerts, Back to School, First Night, Homecoming, Family Weekend, Quakin' the Quad, Welcome Week, Up All Night, New Student Orientation and High School Open House programs).
  10. Assist Student Government Association in the coordination and advisement of special programs/projects that include Leadership retreats, Fall/Spring Elections, First Night, Pantherpalooza RSO Fair, Student Leadership Council, Campus Life Night, Spoken Word Series, Unity Week, RSO Awards Ceremony, and Panther Service Day.
  11. Assist in the implementation of Student Organizational Support Services – iLEAD Series for Registered Student Organizations. The iLEAD Series – RSO Orientation Meetings, Leadership Workshop Series, Leadership Newsletter, On-Line Leadership Library, Leadership Clinics and the Student Leadership Council.
  12. Assist in the development of Student Volunteer Services, programs, resources and opportunities that promote service-learning experiences among student organizations and leaders – P.A.W.S. in the Community (Panthers Advocating Welfare & Service in the Community) (i.e. Toys for Tots, Sweep the Streets, Panther Service Day, etc.).
  13. Provide staff supervision of Late Night Dances and Up All Night Events in the MLK Jr. Union.
  14. Attend regional and national conferences of NACA, NASPA, ACUI, ACPA, etc. as deemed necessary by the staff and/or as funds permit. Participation on conference committees is strongly encouraged.
  15. Serve as a role model and mentor for student leaders and Staff Liaison within the Student Life Office and Student Affairs Division.
  16. ssist in the Development of innovative services and cutting-edge programs that challenge the Student Life Office to continually expand its services and programs that meet the diverse needs of the University population.
  17. Other administrative duties as assigned by the Student Life Office staff.
  • Bachelors Degree and acceptance into EIU Graduate School
  • Acceptance into a Eastern Illinois University Master’s Degree Graduate Program of choice
  • Undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 (on 4.0 scale) and MAT or GRE scores
  • Maintain full-time graduate student status and completion of the 48-credit hour program
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Effective organizational, planning and conceptualized skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and provide staff assistance to students and student groups of varied cultural backgrounds; sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural diversity issues a must
  • Undergraduate experience in student activities, student leadership development, student volunteerism, multicultural programming and/or Student Government
  • A strong commitment, knowledge-base and understanding of student programming is essential
  • Highly motivated individual with good interpersonal and time management skills
  • Computer Technology and Graphic Design knowledge and skills are a plus.
