School-based Cohort Immersion Program

SCIP FAQs

What is the School-based Cohort Immersion Program or SCIP?
SCIP  is a new design for teacher education meant to be equally beneficial for K-6 classroom  teachers, children, education majors, and EIU professors and to enable the long-term bonds of a true learning community.

What makes SCIP different from traditional coursework and clinical experiences?
SCIP is a pilot program offered to incoming freshman Education Scholars, Fall, 2002.  Participants are/will be introduced to Charleston K-6 buildings, placed with SCIP teachers, and closely advised and mentored throughout their professional program.  SCIP professional education includes volunteer hours in host classrooms, block courses to be taught at the Charleston schools, technology training and participation, and classroom interactions with master teachers and K-6 students all four years.

What are the anticipated benefits?
• Participation in learning  community
• Access to local schools
• Long-term interaction with administrators, master teachers and children
• Customized advising
• Applied technology
• School-based methods classes
• Professional seminars
• Assurances for student teaching placements
• Peer bonding and SCIP cohort support
• Field trips to diverse classrooms of the area
