The four State Goals for Learning in Biological and Physical Sciences provide a new perspective for education in science.
As a result of their schooling students will have a working knowledge of:
Outcome 1 Students will be able to understand patterns and orderliness in which conditions or events occur.
Outcome 2 Students will be able to relate how two or more things interact and the effect each has on the other.
Outcome 1 Students will be able to understand the relationships between the natural and technological world.
Outcome 2 Students will be able to understand society's responsibility for the environment and natural resources.
Outcome 1 Students will be able to use the scientific method.
Outcome 2 Students will be able to understand the need to collect, organize, and/or evaluate data.
Outcome 1 Students will be able to recognize or make a prediction and/or inference based on observations and/or experimental results.
Outcome 2 Students will be able to use scientific equipment in a simple experiment.
The following course objectives have been developed in such a way that each objective is to be covered during every grade from Kindergarten through Sixth grade:
2. Students will identify common characteristics of living and non- living entities. (GOAL 1)
3. Students will recognize cause and effect relationships which allow predictions to be made. (GOALS 3 and 4)
4. Students will identify stages, mechanisms, and rates of change. (GOALS 1 and 2)
5. Students will recognize the relationships between the natural and technological world. (GOAL 2)
7. Students will recognize application of scientific research to decision making. (GOALS 3 and 4)
8. Students will identify selected non-renewable and renewable natural resources. (GOAL 2)
9. Students will relate why controlled variables are used in an experiment. (GOALS 3 and 4)
10. Students will analyze, evaluate, or replicate the experimental work of others. (GOAL 3)
12. Students will evaluate collected data. (GOALS 3 and 4)
13. Students will infer knowledge from accurate observations. (GOALS 3 and 4)
14. Students will communicate experimental results. (GOALS 3 and 4)
15. Students will use various measuring devices. (GOAL 4)
The objectives should be studied in Earth Science, Physical Science, and
Life Science.
