The Cal Smith Civic Engagement Annual Scholarship
Description: Established in 2013, The Cal Smith Civic Engagement Annual Scholarship was created to honor Dr. Calvin Smith and his teaching career in the Communication Studies Department at Eastern Illinois University. The scholarship will benefit students majoring in Communication Studies and associated with civic engagement. Eligible students must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student majoring in Communication Studies, accepted to Eastern Illinois University. Recipient(s) must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0. The recipient(s) must satisfy at least one of the following criteria associated with civic engagement: community involvement: voting, participating in political causes, volunteer work, speaking out against injustice, etc. and/or the cultivation of an informed position on an important and controversial issue as evidenced in some form of public communication (essay, public presentations, etc.). Applicants shall submit a one-page essay describing their association with civic engagement along with prior written work, if applicable. Financial need is a consideration. The recipient(s) are not eligible to receive the award more than once. The award(s) shall be annouced in the Spring and paid in the Fall to Eastern Illinois University to be first applied against costs (tuition, fees, housing, etc.) associated with the recipient(s) attending EIU.
