Brian Reed Excellence in Jazz Annual Scholarship
Description: Established in 2012, The Brian Reed Excellence in Jazz Annual Scholarship was created to promote the appreciation of Jazz as an essential American musical art form and to encourage the study and performance of Jazz, Bass, Guitar, Percussion, and Piano. Criteria for selection are as follows: Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, enrolled at Eastern Illinois University, participating in the Jazz Studies Program and concentrating primarily on one of the following musical instruments: Bass, Guitar, Percussion or Piano. To demonstrate commitment to obtaining a well-rounded, serious higher education, applicants other than incoming freshman must have an overall college GPA of no less than a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants shall submit a statement indicating why he or she has chosen this field of study and identifying the instructor, mentor, musician, composer, or musical composition that has had an impact on or otherwise influenced the Applicant's decision to pursue the study of Jazz. The statement can be of any length, but should be sufficiently drafted to demonstrate the Applicant's ability to communicate honestly and effectively in writing. Financial need may be a consideration in selecting the award recipient(s) at the discretion of the Selection Committee. The recipient(s) may be eligible to receive the award again provided he or she continues to meet the stated criteria. This scholarship will have two awards: One for the Spring semester (announced in the Fall) and one for the Fall semester (announced in the Spring). At the end of each semester for which an award has been made, the recipient of this award will be publically acknowledged as a recipient of the Brian Reed Excellence in Jazz Annual Scholarship during an Eastern Illinois University jazz concert. The award(s) shall be paid to Eastern Illinois University to be first applied against costs (tuition, fees, housing, etc.) associated with the recipient(s) attending Eastern Illinois University.
