Tips For Tutors
ADOPT A STUDENT
Carl Sandburg Elementary School , Spring 2005

Thank you for volunteering for the Adopt-A-Student program!  You are certainly making a difference in a child’s life!

Routine:

  1. Make sure that you have a record of all students’ names for whom you have charge.
  2. A sign in sheet will be on the first table as you enter the cafeteria.  Please initial the appropriate day to indicate that you were there.
  3. Pick up your student’s folder (if available) from the same table.  A graduate assistant or parent volunteer will be at each session to assist you.  Notice a skill sheet filled out by the child’s teacher that may give suggestions for areas where help is needed.  Teachers want to help but it is impossible to make individual assignments for each student.  Please use creativity and resourcefulness to find activities to fit the needs on the list.
  4. In the case of mini-courses, please be prepared at each session with quality, age-appropriate lessons that are designed not only to teach but also to be fun.  Reasonable supplies will be provided by Carl Sandburg.  Please let Ms. Shepherd or Mr. Carey know your needs.
  5. By 2:40, all EIU tutors should be inside the cafeteria so the halls will be clear for student dismissal.  Students will come to the cafeteria.  In the case of mini courses, the EIU tutor will then take students to the appropriate room.
  6. A graduate assistant or a parent volunteer will disperse snacks.
  7. A coordinator will flick the lights in the cafeteria to indicate that there are five minutes remaining.  He/She will go to mini course rooms to remind of the five-minute mark.
  8. Return any folders to the front table in the cafeteria.
  9. If you have specific questions about students, write them down and leave them with a coordinator.  We will see that it reaches the teacher.
  10. If you are unable to attend due to an emergency, please call the school or Ms. Shepherd immediately with your name, day of tutoring, and assignment.  This causes many problems and should be avoided if at all possible.
  11. Only students attending all four sessions will receive certificates.  SORRY, NO EXCEPTIONS!!
