Becoming a Member

Membership in Psi Chi is open to those who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests and who are students or faculty members at Eastern Illinois University. Both undergraduate and graduate students who have registered for major or minor standing in psychology or for a program psychological in nature may be eligible for membership if other requirements are fulfilled.

 

Eligibility for undergraduates includes:

  1. Must be a Psychology major or minor
  2. Must have a 3.00 overall GPA and at least a 3.35 GPA in Psychology at Eastern. (Access your transcript through PAWS and attach to the application, or apply at the Records Office in Old Main for an official copy of you transcripts to be sent to Psi Chi.)
  3. Must have completed 3 semesters of college courses and have completed at least 9 semester hours of psychology. (Transfer students must have established a GPA at Eastern.)
  4. No second semester seniors who do not plan to do graduate work at Eastern are eligible for membership.
  5. You must submit a typewritten essay of application to Psi Chi. The purpose of this essay is for you to tell the members about your interests, goals, and how your memberships will benefit the organization. Excerpts from this essay will be used to introduce you at the formal initiation ceremony, so please be specific concerning your goals in psychology. You must have a faculty member sign your letter in order for the faculty to better know your professional interests.
  6. You must have the faculty signature list completed with at least 13 signatures.
  7. There is a one-time $35.00 registration fee for the national registration and $6.00 dues each semester for the local chapter.

Eligibility for graduate students includes:

  1. Must be a Psychology major or minor
  2. Must have a 3.00 overall GPA and at least a 3.35 GPA in Psychology at Eastern (if graduate GPA has not yet been establish past undergraduate transcript should be sent to Psi Chi.)
  3. You must submit a typewritten essay of application to Psi Chi. The purpose of this essay is for you to tell the members about your interests, goals, and how your memberships will benefit the organization. Excerpts from this essay will be used to introduce you at the formal initiation ceremony, so please be specific concerning your goals in psychology. You must have a faculty member sign your letter in order for the faculty to better know your professional interests.

Membership in Psi Chi is open to qualified candidates of any age, sex, sexual orientation, race, handicap or disability, color, religion, and national and ethnic origin.


 

Professional Goals

  • Programs/Workshops: Graduate school preparation; speakers on various topics such as clinical and school psychology; speakers from local agencies; research at Eastern.
  • Faculty: We hope Psi Chi will continue to have an interest in and assist with faculty research.
  • National Activities: Affiliation with other Psi Chi chapters nationwide (MPA Convention and Psi Chi Newsletter) and the facilitation of exchange of psychological information and knowledge.
