Clinical Laboratory Science Program

Eastern Illinois University offers a program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in clinical laboratory science (formerly medical technology). The CLS degree program consists of three years (90 semester hours) of coursework at EIU, followed by a period of clinical training (32 hours) in an affiliated hospital laboratory. The courses taken at the affiliated hospitals are EIU courses and therefore are entered on a student's transcript.

Upon successful completion of the hospital work, the student becomes a candidate for a college degree and is eligible to take the certifying examinations of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists for registry as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Eastern is currently affiliated with the following accredited schools of clinical laboratory science/medical technology:

Participation in the clinical laboratory science program at EIU does not assure admission to an affiliated hospital program. Students apply to the affiliated hospital of their choice during the fall of their junior year. Each hospital school is affiliated with several colleges and universities and selects students on the basis of overall grade point averages, grades earned in science courses, personal interviews, and letters of recommendation.

The major GPA is based on required courses.  To be assured of serious consideration for acceptance by one of the affiliated schools, the student should have achieved a minimum cumulative and major grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. EIU has an excellent record of placement of qualified students into the hospital programs.
