Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society    "Truth I Pursue"

Alpha Epsilon Delta was initially established on April 28, 1926 by a group of dedicated premedical students at the University of Alabama.  By 1930, the organization consisted of five chapters and held its first national convention. In 1962 the Society became nationally recognized as a non-profit, educational organization.  Today, Alpha Epsilon Delta has grown to an impressive body of of over 100,000 memberships  in 168 chapters.

The goals of the society are to:

  • Encourage and recognize excellence in premedical scholarship.

  • Stimulate an appreciation of the importance of premedical education in the study of medicine.

  • Promote cooperation and contacts between an adequate program of premedical students and educators in developing  an adequate program of premedical education.

  • Bind together similarly interested students.

  • Use its knowledge for the benefit of health organizations, charities, and the community.

The motto is incorporated in the name:  Alpha Epsilon Delta-Truth I Pursue.
The colors are red and violet.  The representative flower is the red rose.
The Society's national office publishes its own newsletter: The Scalpel

Illinois Theta Chapter

The Illinois Theta Chapter of Eastern Illinois University became a national charter member of the AED society on May 5, 1977.  We were the 35th member initiated during the 32nd national convention. On May 21, 1998 the Illinois Theta chapter received the 500 member award, an award that acknowledges chapters whose membership have reached the 500 member mark.

The Illinois Theta chapter of AED is the active premedical society at Eastern Illinois University. As members, we would like to welcome you to the University and invite you to participate in some of our chapter activities. Though officially listed as a premedical society, our chapter of AED welcomes students interested in all health-related fields (nursing, dentistry, chiropractic medicine, optometry, veterinary medicine, etc.).

AED offers guidance to students through entrance exam preparation, entrance essay review, and opportunities to speak with local health professionals. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in the chapter’s philanthropic and social functions to build both character and camaraderie with peers.

Although official induction into Alpha Epsilon Delta requires upper-class standing, all EIU pre-health professional students are encouraged to participate in chapter activities. We hope to see you during your time at Eastern Illinois University. Good luck!

For more information please watch for activity announcements in the newspaper or posted in the science buildings or contact chapter advisors Dr. Jeff Laursen to be placed on our e-mail list.
