Opportunities to Grow

At EIU, we provide you an opportunity to explore different varieties of engineering before you’re asked to commit to a particular major. One particular way we facilitate this decision-making process is by hosting speakers who visit campus and discuss your options, giving you a good deal of information about the various areas of engineering.

Once finished at EIU, our students have the flexibility to transfer to a number of institutions to complete their engineering degrees. While our closest relationship is with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, it is one of many options you’ll have.

Year data provided by UIUC shows that more than 95 percent of EIU pre-engineering students who transfer to UIUC have successfully completed their engineering degrees. Compare that to the average success rate of its transfer students from all schools, which is just 75 percent.

Affordability

Lower cost. Eastern has a lower total cost of attendance for in-state students than almost any other state institution in Illinois. Check out comparisons at http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/ This is from the National Center for Education Statistics. For the 2011-2012 school year a comparison of 4 year public residential institutions in Illinois will show that Eastern is less expensive than almost all of the other schools. In fact, EIU comes in 9.3% (which is a savings of more than $2000) less than the average of this comparison group.

Personal Touch

In our department, you're not just a face in the crowd. With small class sizes, typically around 20 students in your science and math courses, we can offer you a personal touch and strong relationships with your instructors.

Dedicated Faculty

  • We have an outstanding faculty that is devoted to your education and college experience. Our classes and labs are all taught by faculty and not graduate students.
  • Research opportunities with faculty. Mentored research in a variety of areas is available.
