59 high schools within the central Illinois region sent 480 of their brightest students to Eastern's campus for the 25th Annual WYSE ACADEMIC CHALLENGE Sectional Competition which was held on March 11th, 1999. This is the 18th year that Eastern has co-sponsored the competition.
The WYSE ACADEMIC CHALLENGE is an academic tournament with competition for individuals and schools. Students demonstrated their abilities in two of the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Fundamentals, Engineering Graphics, English, Mathematics and Physics. The event, the state's largest, most comprehensive academic competition, is sponsored by Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering, headquartered at the University of Illinois, which coordinates competitions at the Regional, Sectional, and State levels. This year, more than 7000 students from 500 Illinois high schools participated in the competition. EIU's Sectional Competition was hosted by the Pre-Engineering Studies Committee. Winning schools and individuals at the Sectional level will proceed to the State Competition which is held on the UIUC campus.
Schools competed in one of three divisions, based on school enrollment: Division 300 - for schools with up to 300 students; Division 700 - for schools from 301 to 700 students; and Division 1500 - for schools with enrollments from 701 to 1500 students.
The exams have been compared to the Advanced Placement tests that qualify high school students for college credit, and were drawn up by college professors from various universities around the state. After introductory remarks by Dr. William Weber, Associate Dean of the College of Sciences, the participants at Eastern's Sectional Competition took the 40 minute exams, in two sessions. The exams were proctored by EIU faculty and students: Dr. James Conwell, Physics; Dr. Jon Blitz, Chemistry; Dr. Keith Andrew, Physics; Mr. Marti Sampson, Physics student; and Mr. Patrick Stroz, Pre-Engineering student. Individual awards and team trophies were presented by Dr. Lida Wall, Dean of the College of Sciences, and by Dr. Leonard Storm, Chair of the Pre-Engineering Studies Committee, at an awards ceremony that was held in the Grand Ballroom of the University Union that afternoon. Pictures of winning teams and individuals were taken by Mr. Charles Miller, Dr. Keith Andrew, and Dr. Douglas Brandt.
Winning individuals and schools are listed below.
