Emeritus Faculty of The Political Science Department

The successes of the Political Science Department owe much to faculty members who have set
the foundation for today's generation of professors and students. With apologies to any earlier
retired professors not in our modern records, the list below is designed as a small tribute to many
years of dedicated service. Students of the history of the department easily will recognize that
this list includes some impressive and noteworthy credentials and accomplishments, such as:

  • A professor who figured prominently in the success of the department's Honors Program, in the process serving on the committees for an impressive number of undergraduate Honors theses (Professor Poole).
  • Three former department chairs (Professors Connelly, Goodrick and Thorsen),
  • Three professors who played critical roles in the development of the university's Pre-Law Program (Professors Hollister, Leigh and Evans),
  • Three professors who made significant contributions to the development of the department's undergraduate government simulations (Professors Faust, Leigh and Brazil),
  • Key contributors to the early development of the department's comparative politics/ international relations curriculum (Professors Lateef and Thorsen),
  • A former state legislator and state party Central Committee representative whose memorial service included comments by a former governor (Professor Connelly),
  • A professor known on campus and throughout the region for coordinating campus visits by high profile U.S. and international government officials (Professor Chen),
  • The department's best-ever teller of politics-related stories and anecdotes (Professor Scism),
  • And a professor whose dedication to civic engagement and service learning by political science students culminated in applied scholarship on these important subjects (Professor Poole).
