Athletic Academic Services
P.A.C.E - Panther Athletics Committment to Excellence

Academic Services Honors Statement

Academic performance is monitored both formally and informally by the academic services staff.  Attendance, effort, and course grades are monitored.

Each student-athlete shares progress reports with their professors which enables open communication. Coaches receive a copy of the monitoring reports and meet with student-athletes to discuss their academic progress.

Academic Services encourages student-athletes to bring academic concerns to the attention of a staff member as soon as possible.

Eastern Illinois University Mission Statement

"Eastern Illinois University offers superior yet accessible undergraduate and graduate education. Students learn the methods and outcomes of free inquiry in the arts, sciences, humanities and professions guided by a faculty known for its commitment to teaching, research/creative activity, and service. The University community strives to create an educational and cultural environment in which students refine their abilities to reason and to communicate clearly so as to become responsible citizens in a diverse world."

Individual Priority Registration

Panther student-athletes receive priority registration within their EIU academic unit or major. It is important to be advised early and to register at the earliest possible date to ensure enrollment in the proper classes.

Counseling & Mentoring

Members of the Academic Services Office staff meet with individual student-athletes on a variety of academic, athletic, career and personal issues.  Time is also spent helping individuals improve time management, study skills, and assignment preparation.  When necessary and appropriate, student- athletes are referred to specialized resources and services, both on and off-campus.

NCAA Eligibility

The NCAA requires student-athletes to complete 20% of their degree each academic year. Student-athletes must maintain a 2.00 grade point average. All student-athletes must pass a minimum of six degree credit hours each academic semester.

Tutoring

There are a variety of tutors available through the academic departments on campus. Individual or group tutors will be obtained as necessary. Tutoring services are free of charge to Panther student-athletes.

Community Service 'Extend-A-Paw'

Student-athletes are encouraged to participate in the Panther "Extend a Paw" program... a program designed to provide community service opportunities in the Charleston area. Projects include reading books to children in schools, conducting food drives, involvement in nursing homes, etc. Volunteer placements can be arranged by the Director of Academic Services for student-athletes.

Panther Achievements

  • An average of 51% of our student-athletes had semester GPA's above 3.00 during the spring semesters of 2005 and 52% during the fall semester 2005;

Panther Athletics Commitment to Excellence Center

The lastest addition to facility upgrades will be the athletic department's PACE Center, anticipated to open in 2006.

This will consolidate the athletic academic services staff offices with space for study areas and individual & small group tutoring. A computer lab will also provide additional resources for Panther student-athletes.

This initiative will help Eastern Illinois continue its priority for the academic success of Panther student-athletes.
