Data for evaluation of the learning objectives will be collected in a professional portfolio required for all students. This portfolio is developed as the student progresses through the curriculum with submissions required each semester. Please see attached policy and procedure for portfolio.
Formative Evaluation:
Submissions for the portfolio will be reviewed by the course faculty each semester. Any problems/deficiencies will be brought to Nursing Council for discussion each semester by the faculty member for the course.
Summative Evaluation:
The Director will be responsible for compilation of portfolio data into an annual assessment data summary.
The faculty will analyze the results during an annual assessment retreat during March of each year.
In May, the Nursing Council will make necessary changes and improvements in instruction, curriculum, and learning, based on the assessment data so that changes may be implemented the next academic year.
Results of both formative and summative evaluation will be communicated via Nursing Council minutes and university assessment reports.
The entire assessment plan (including all elements required for accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) will be evaluated and revised as needed in Nursing Council each September.

This is the first Student Learning Assessment Program Summary Form submitted from the RN to BS in Nursing Program. Therefore, there are no responses to previous comments included in the report. The report reflects extensive planning carried out by the faculty of the Nursing Program and is based on the program outcomes. It details which data will be collected to assess the learning outcomes, as well as how the data will be collected, evaluated, and communicated. The assessment plan forms the basis of a model of evaluation that includes meaningful program revision. Specific times for implementation of the various elements of the plan are specified.
The assessment of student learning is only one component of a larger assessment plan being developed by the nursing faculty. The total plan is congruent with the accreditation guidelines of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and will be a part of a larger Program self-study. This larger plan includes formative and summative evaluation of the program as well as of student learning within the program. The total plan includes assessment of program mission and governance, institutional commitment and resources, curriculum and teaching-learning practices, and student performance and faculty accomplishments.
During the first year of the program, program assessment data will be collected and used to improve curriculum, instruction, and learning. The first program assessment will consist of open-ended questions about strengths and areas for improvement and will be carried out during the 7th week of courses and at the end of each semester. This formative assessment will allow the faculty to make changes in the curriculum in a timely manner, maximizing the effectiveness of the program and ensuring that the program meets the needs of the target population and other constituents such as employers. We hope that this will help to establish a strong reputation for the program as it becomes established, increasing desirability and enrollment.
See Professional Portfolio Policy and Procedure for further information about the portfolio process.
